Mexico. Eduardo Arellano-Felix the alleged leader of Mexico’s Arelano-Felix Cartel was arrested on Saturday evening after a shootout in Tijuana, Mexico which is located by the US border.
Eduardo Arellano, also known as “The Doctor,” is an alleged leader of one of the most powerful drug cartels in the world: Mexico’s Arellano-Felix Cartel. He is accused of trafficking hundreds of tonnes of cocaine and marijuana to the US.
According to the Mexican defence department, police arrested the suspect on Saturday evening after chasing his car to a home in an upscale neighbourhood of Tijuana.
Mr Arellano-Felix and his sister, Enedina Arellano-Felix, took over the leadership of the cartel after several of their brothers were either arrested or killed, the Mexican authorities say. Still, Enedina Arellano-Felix is the only main suspect from the family who remains at large.
A three-hour gun battle erupted involving more than 100 police and soldiers and the house was “riddled with bullets,” federal police told by Reuters.
Mexican Assistant Secretary Facundo Rosas said “The generation of brothers who formed this criminal organisation has been dissolved”. However, to the Mexican official, Enedina’s son, Luis Fernando Sanchez Arellano, has taken over the cartel’s operations.
Since 2006 Mr Felipe Calderon’s government has sent tens of thousands of troops and federal police to fight escalating drug violence, but the arrests of major cartel leaders have been few. This is partly due to the profound corruption in the Mexican judicial and military system that adds to the government’s impossibility to fight the remaining cartels.
This has lead to gruesome tactics from rival gangs across the country. Including violent tactics such as beheading or mutilating their victims and dumping dozens of bodies in public places. As well as leaving public placards on bridges and other public viewable places such as bridges or public offices to denounce the government’s protection to certain Cartels, and the exposure of alliances between Cartel leaders and high profile politicians.
The Arellano-Felix family dominated the smuggling of cocaine and marijuana into California in the 1990s and are feared for its ruthless elimination of enemies. The weakening of the family has led other Mexican drug cartels to move in on Tijuana, transforming the city into a chaotic battleground in Felipe Caderon’s drug war.
