Ciudad Juarez, Mexico- A t least eight people died on Friday when a group of masked gunmen opened fire at the Villa del Mar Restaurant in the Mexican border town of Ciudad Juarez.
Local authorities said the gunmen arrived at the restaurant in three cars, approached a group of people and opened fire.
According to witness, the massacre occurred around 20:00pm. They were uncertain if the attack was aimed towards a particular group of people or if it was indiscriminate, since the victims were all sitting at the same table.
Also on Friday, 8 other murders were reported in the same city, six in Baja California State, 2 in Puebla State and 1 more in Guerrero State. Summing a total of 25 violent deaths related to organized crime in Mexico on the same day.
Ciudad Juarez is known as one of the most dangerous border cities in Mexico. In the last year, the city across the frontier from el Paso, Texas, has seen spiralling violence, most of it connected with drug traffic.
This violent attack also took place exactly a 100 days after the Mexican government’s National Anti-delincuence Agreement was negotiated with civil organizations and citizens who demanded effective security across the country. This demand took place at a massive rally held on August 30th 2008 where thousands people marched
The massive protest took place in 71 cities simultaneously.
Felipe Calderon’s government vowed to fight the drug cartels and take solid actions against organized crime. However, it has failed to decrease the level of corruption related to cartels in it’s local and federal institutions
In the past months, organized crime related violence has significantly increased across the country, including in States where the criminal rate was low.
