A video surfaced earlier today where a group of animals from the La Pastora Zoo, in the city of Monterrey, act terrorized by the sound of fireworks used in the inauguration of C.F. Monterrey against the portuguese squad of Benfica.

The video shows a herd of deer running scared because of the explosions. Some areas of the La Pastora Zoo are located just 50 yards from the stadium. Because of this, many of the 700 animals which call La Pastora their home will be affected.

As anybody who has lived near animals can confirm, strong noises such as fireworks or thunderstorms terrify many of them. Some Animal Welfare groups consider exposing them to loud noises as a form of animal cruelty.

C.F. Monterrey, FEMSA, Heineken and the rest of the sponsors should refrain from using fireworks during the games from now on. The fact that a zoo is just next door from a venue like this should have been taken into account before the stadium was constructed, and must be taken into account in the future.
